It’s the new year again and many of us are working on our goals for the year, or perhaps reassessing where you are going with your life, but did you know that up to 80% of New Year’s resolutions are never realized?

We often start the new year with good intentions and all kinds of goal-based plans, but many end up quitting after a just a few weeks, or never they really get any traction in the first place.

Now I hate to use the word “fail” with resolutions, because I truly believe that any attempt at something new will create learning if we are open to it, so to look at it as a failure can be very self-defeating and play into our self-sabotaging internal talk, but it’s good to take a look at why resolutions are often thrown on the scrap heap within the first month.

One of the main reasons I see that goals are not met is that they are created as stand-alone quick fixes, rather than part of a bigger picture?

What if you were to ask yourself, is this New Year’s goal tied to my purpose and my big life goals?

Without tying goals to your purpose, or your big life goals, you may find that you are putting a lot of effort into things that don’t really matter to you, in fact, you may be doing what others, society, or you think you “should” be doing.  If you take out the should’s and replace them with the “I want to’s”, and measure these against your purpose, you might be surprised to see what comes up. Some of them may stay the same, some may change but when you start out on your new course, keeping your purpose in mind, you are likely to see your success rate rise.

So, if you have trouble making changes, reaching goals, figuring out what to do next, or just feel like you’re going through life without much direction, maybe this year, it’s time to delve into your purpose and what you are really meant to be doing on your journey called life.
